Hello friends! Welcome back to another week of our Women In Business Series!
As you might have read in our announcement from the previous week, (which you can catch up on here), this month our Sponsor for the series is Howard Hanna Real Estate. We are featuring women in their company that have proven to be the ones who can have it all. They are paving the way for other women agents, especially moms that still want a full-time career that they can control.
This week one of those women, is a mom that has shown you can have it all. She is has established herself in the real estate business, and still maintains her sanity in motherhood! Let’s meet this dynamic woman!
OUR WOMEN IN BUSINESS FEATURE OF THE WEEK IS….
Robbins Bobbitt, Director of Sales in the Howard Hanna Upper St. Clair Office
Here is a little background on Robbins career with Howard Hanna.
Hi, Robbins! Thank you so much for being a part of our series! Let’s chat for a few minutes about how you got started in Real Estate.
Well, I was a newly separated mother of 3 children with a business in interior design. I knew that the economy was slowing down, and I had to make a change to support my family. I had no one to fall back on which was scary and left me with many sleepness nights. Over the years, friends had encouraged me to start a career in Real Estate, but I never listened. Now that I was thinking “outside the box,” I wondered if it might really work. The ability to take my children to school in the morning and pick them up every afternoon was important to me. I remembered a wonderful Howard Hanna Real Estate Manager that I worked with on a PTA fundraising event. I reached out to her, and laid all my cards on the table. She became a huge supporter and is still a mentor to this day. I joined Howard Hanna and gave this new career everything. Sometimes I showed houses with my young daughter along. My clients would smile and accepted her presence graciously. In fact, when she wasn’t there, they would ask where my assistant was! I was so grateful for their kindness. Somehow I did it…we did it. Without the support of my children, my career would have been impossible. There wasn’t one day of the week I didn’t work. Month by month, and sale by sale, I grew in the knowledge and skills necessary to have a successful career here at Howard Hanna.
That is such an amazing and inspiring story! I am so impressed with how you overcame the obstacle many women have with a single income and raising children. And the best part, your children probably gained so much strength from you, seeing you be strong and successful for not only them, but yourself!
So, we know how you got into the business, but tell the readers how long, and what you do as a Director of Sales
I have been in the Real Estate business for 5+ years, and I hit the ground running! The great thing about this industry, is you are helping people. As Sales Director I help my agents help their buyers and sellers. At Howard Hanna we don’t compete with our agents. They are in the front lines and loving every minute of it.
I have been a Sales Manager before in a different industry, but I know that there qualities you have to possess to be in this type of career. Any tips for the readers that are looking to dive into a career in real estate?
It is a very rewarding full-time career. Real Estate takes people skills, patience, negotiation skills, strong education, entrepreneurial spirit, sales experience, and a willingness to continually learn. Interior design and marketing backgrounds are also complimentary to the industry. It’s a fast paced business environment that is ideal for self starters. As I found it’s a great career for those involved in their community with school, non-profit, or club activities and perfect for mothers who want their own career. Your have got to be a people person and be willing to talk to everyone! If that describes you, then you will find real estate is very rewarding!
What is one thing that is so unique about being in the Real Estate business?
I would have to say, Real Estate is fun. We can meet clients from all over the world. Many are moving into our area from other states and countries. I have had made so many amazing friends and clients that I have had the privilege of working with. I love the variety, personal stories, and excitement everyone brings with them!
That would be so neat to meet different people all the time, especially from different parts of the world! Ok, so we have talked to the business side of Robbins, what about the mom side? How do manage it all?
Motherhood does come with responsibilities. Flexibility and humor are key! I can have an agent calling at any time of the day or night. My children understand this is and are supportive of my career. Especially now that they are older. They all learned to chip in and take of the house… which is not a bad thing! My oldest son is 23, and just graduated from Penn State and lives in Connecticut. My second son is 21 and attends WVU, so he is “in and out” with the school year. My daughter is just starting high school this year! She is my “blossom” and growing up before my eyes. We take care of each other since we are really the only two at home now!
I’ve learned life is an evolving journey… and it’s different at all the “places” along that path. My children are the beautiful parts of my journey.
I love that, and it’s so true! We now know all about your mommy life, what about things you do for fun, or maybe want to do in the future?
I am not as great with balance in my life, unfortunately. Right now my daughter and I have been taking a spinning class three times a week. We listen to music, get exercise, and enjoy ourselves. I enjoy taking longs walks on the weekends, and promised my son I would take up golf! I’m not sure how that is going to happen, but I will figure it out!
Now, one last thing, I always ask, has their been a woman/women in your life that have inspired you to become the business woman you are today?
Yes! Ruth Foltz. She is Sales Manager and Vice President at Howard Hanna Real Estate. She has always been an inspiration and a role model to me. Her witty spunk, and business knowledge have inspired me since the first time I met her. She makes it all happen and is a huge success at being a mother, and a professional women. I am so lucky to know her, and learn from her amazing wisdom.
She sounds fantastic! I am always so eager to hear how women have been empowered by other women to live their best lives!
Well friends, that is all for this week! I want to thank Robbins for being a part of the series, and look forward to seeing her accomplish many things in the future! I hope you were inspired by her story, and the strength she has given to herself and children, all while having a full-time career!
