Welcome back my friends to another week of our Women In Business Series! This week we are featuring a woman with a love and passion for music, Dr. Mary Lynne Bennett.
I can’t wait to tell you all about her business, so grab a cup of coffee and come on in!
Do you know how important music is to a growing child? It is so important, that they have classes designated just to have children play with musical instruments, listen to music, and sing!
Giuliana and I were given the opportunity to experience one of these classes by Mary. We went to a community center in our local area where she holds her Music Together classes.
Music Together is a family music class experience for children ages birth-5 and the grownups who love them. In Music Together classes Mary teachs infants, toddlers, preschoolers, parents, caregivers, and grandparents! It is an awesome intergenerational experience to see children at so many ages and stages with parents, grandparents, nannies, etc. having fun making music together.
When we visited the class, it was great, because a few kids were not in attendance that day, and it was a smaller intimate class. Mary had the room set up with mats for the kiddos, (of course my child roams and does not sit, ever) but she had us all start by sitting in a circle and singing a welcome song! It was so cute that she mentioned each child’s name in the song!
The class was interactive and fun so it kept the attention of the kids, even if they were running around the room! They were listening to music from different cultures, dancing and using musical instruments to play along!
After meeting Mary, I obviously was so happy to hear how she became involved and inspired to do this and wanted to learn more about her.
Besides being the Center Director for Music Together, Dr. Mary Lynne Bennett serves on the piano faculty at Duquesne University, runs an independent piano studio in Allison Park, PA, AND she is also a church organist! Whooo! She has a crazy schedule but finds the time to do all that and still completely devote her time to her three young musicians she is raising at home!
When I asked Mary how she got started doing this, I found such great story!
The founder of Music Together is my mother’s cousin’s husband, so I learned about the program through the family connection. They gave me a Family Favorites CD when my oldest child was little and we fell in love with the music. He’s 10, almost 11 now and he still sings along. In 2011, I scheduled a teacher training at the university I taught at, mainly for my students, to see if they wanted to start teaching the program, and now I have the great opportunity to teach it myself and share it with others in the community.
Her business is unique because her studio offers quality music making experiences for all ages. Her Music Together classes are held at the Hampton Township Community Center which has an outstanding facility and dance studio where there is plenty of room to move and have fun. Plus, her piano studio is conveniently located near the Hampton Township Community Center and in a central point North of the city, convenient to many neighboring communities such as Fox Chapel, Gibsonia, Mars, McCandless, Wexford, and Shaler, and she has students who come from all of those areas.
Of course our series is all about inspiring women, so when I asked Mary what other type of women inspire her she said:
I am inspired by all women who are willing to strike out on their own. My mother sold Avon and Tupperware for many years, so I grew up in a household where mom was constantly making opportunities for herself and I think that inspired me the most.
Mary’s Music Together classes are so fun and such a great way to meet other parents, as well as having your child learn fun ways to enjoy music.
Mary is running the Spring Session for Music Together from March 20-May 22 on Thursdays at 10:30am, and even though the session has already started, she is still accepting registrations through this Thursday, April 3. Her next session will be a Summer Session in July and August, then the Fall Session will be September-November. Stay tuned for dates and times!
