Welcome back to our weekly Women In Business Series my friends! This week we are featuring a woman who truly knows how to build a business and a brand that is unique to our area,
and so inspiring in every sense of the word!
I am pleased to introduce Carrie Nardini creator of I Made It! Market
I meant Carrie a few years back at an I Made It! Market event, and was so impressed with her and what she had created. For those of you who live in the Pittsburgh area, and have never heard of I Made It! Market, well here is your chance to see what this fabulous, creative, and crafty lady has done. She has not only inspired me, but I know many other entrepreneurs out there.
Carrie is not only a business women, but a mom to her little boy, Sid. I admire how she manages motherhood, her business, and all the crazy things that pop into our lives.
When chatting a bit last week with her about an upcoming event that she has this weekend, I just realized that Carrie was truly one of those people that you have an instant connection with. Her and I share a love for marketing and social media, and of course, love all things handmade! Everything that Carrie has done has come from such a good place, and that shows in not only her work, but in her personality.
Do you have one of those “just perfect” handmade pieces of jewelry? Or a piece of pottery that was made exactly for your table settings? Have you ever gone to a craft show, and thought to yourself, why doesn’t our community have more of these? Or are you a crafter, that wants an opportunity to share your creations with others? Look no further, Carrie has you covered with her dream, I Made It! Market.
I Made It! Market is Pittsburgh’s nomadic indie crafts marketplace, which means that we provide opportunities for local artists to sell the wares that they make by hand to a variety of audiences across the Pittsburgh region. We also partner with community, non-profit, and arts organizations to raise awareness for their missions in order to improve the communities we share.
When asking Carrie a little bit more about the business, this is what she had to say.
Why did you start you this business?
I have always been a crafter and have sold jewelry I handmade since high school. I was fortunate to connect with a metalsmith who took me under her wing and shared spaces with me at arts festivals. I then sold to a store in Oakland where I worked as the “bead girl”, customizing more than 2,000 macrame necklaces for customers during college. My interest continued even as I worked in fundraising and marketing. I sold jewelry I made to co-workers and at markets here and there. I found at other artists in the city were looking for opportunities to sell like I was. At one of those events I sat next to Nina Barbuto and we got to chatting about it. We decided right there to make something happen and a month later we held our first I Made It! market.
What about I Made It! Market makes it so unique?
My business pops up and travels around the region – making it surprising to shoppers each time. We have both new and returning artists at each market which adds to the unique and hyper local shopping aspect of I Made It! Market.
And of course, one of the biggest questions that we all want to know, it what other women business owners inspire you?
So many women inspire me. First my friends Kate Stoltzfus and Emily Levenson from Propelle are connecting women entrepreneurs with great opportunities to share their skills with others, to grow a support system for women in the area who are doing their own thing, and making magic happen through those connections. I’m also inspired by other craft market organizers and recently created a private Facebook group where we can “talk shop” and learn from one another. I’m also inspired by women who have identified their genius and are working hard in really specific niches with outstanding results. It’s so fantastic to see women making business happen on their own terms.
“I also love watching the mom/women entrepreneurs who are a part of I Made It! Market as they grow and expand their businesses over time. That is really what we work to achieve!
The market has so many new and fun events coming up for the rest of the year, but one I am really excited to share with you, especially since it is this weekend!
