You are probably reading that title, and thinking I am nuts. You “conquered” Columbus? What the heck is there to conquer in Columbus, Ohio.
Well, I am here to tell you, there is A-L-O-T. Now, on a side note, we conquered it for several reasons, but the main one… we survived it with a very independent, routine loving toddler, who WAS NOT in her element for three whole days. What parent can already see what direction I am heading with this?
Here is why we were there in the first place.
Remember that awesome giveaway I did last month from Experience Columbus? (yes, this one) Myself, and four other Pittsburgh Mom bloggers were invited to experience the same packages that we all gave away, The Roar and Explore Package.
So the first weekend in June, we all packed up our families and headed to Columbus for a fun filled weekend! My great friends from Pittsburgh Mommy Blog, Pgh Momtourage, Momma On a Mission and lil’Burghers and of course myself, Champagne To Crayons.
So my friends, here is how we conquered this fabulous weekend that was so generously sponsored by Experience Columbus. They truly went all out to give us a great getaway weekend, and my family thanks you so very much for it.
When we arrived after our short 3 hour drive, we were greeted by the very kind folks from the Drury Hotel.
They provided us with some fun little welcome gifts that were donated by local businesses in Columbus.
Once we got to the room, it was so exciting to see how Giuliana would act, because she had never been in hotel room before!
I have never stayed at a Drury Hotel, so we didn’t know what to expect. I immediately was impressed. It was clean, the folks who work there were extremely helpful, and it had a few extra amenities that families like ours would love!
- Free Breakfast
- 5:30 Kickback®- this is something unique I have never seen. Their rotating menu features a variety of hot foods, soft drinks, and mixed drinks. It could be your dinner for the evening, a pre-dinner snack, but guess what? From 5:30-7 it is ALL FREE, at least the food and pop. Mixed drinks, you are on our own.
- If you are a soda and popcorn lover, or wan to have a quite night in your room watching a movie, then the FREE Soda and Popcorn in the Lobby that is served from 3-10pm everyday, is something you or your kids would love!
They also have a very nice indoor/outdoor pool that we took advantage of when we got there.
After hanging at the hotel for a bit, we decided to go to the Columbus Arts Festival and see what it was all about! We love ours here in Pittsburgh, so we were anxious to see what other cities were like.
Our walk was really long from our hotel, (which was our fault because we should have just taken a bus or drove) we stopped at a few really cool spots along the way. We needed a little rest from walking, without a stroller (again our fault).
One thing we found on our way down, was an awesome idea that this beautiful city has, it is called CoGo Bike Share.
You can rent one of these bikes for 24 hours for only $6! What a great way to get around!
Once we got to the festival I was very impressed with all the food and art vendors that were there. We ate, we shopped, and had to get going, because some little tiny human was pooped.
But, one little thing, we didn’t want to walk the whole way back. The bus wasn’t coming for a while, she is too young to ride the COSO Share Bikes, so we asked the kind police officers what the best way back would be, without a stroller, of course.
They so were so kind, and made some helpful suggestions, but the best one of all is what happened next. This helped me to continue to believe in the power of random acts of kindness.
This beautiful couple saved our night.
They saw how tired we were from walking, and the obvious distress in my child’s face. And kindly offered, with no hesitation to give us a ride the whole back to our hotel. No waiting for a bus, no walking 3 miles without a stroller in a city we didn’t know.
Yes, you probably thinking, why would I get in the car with strangers, especially with my child. But, he was a police officer, and his girlfriend, was literally one of the sweetest people I have met in a long time. The other officers vouched for him, and we were so blessed that they helped us out. Thank you to our new friends from Columbus, all because of their kindness.
After the day we had, we headed to bed.
We had an exciting day ahead of us on Saturday.
We were getting to experience the number one zoo in the country, and the WATERPARK!! YAY!
Stay tuned to see all about our experience at the Columbus Zoo! Can’t wait to share with you all!
